Eric Voyce celebrates his 90th Birthday!!

Eric, who has been our Bar Doorman since 1985, celebrated his 90th birthday at a party in the Club on Monday 26th October!
He has been married to his wife Madelaine (pictured above with Eric) for 63 years and they have a son, Mike,
a Granddaughter, Grandson and even a Great Granddaughter.
He repaired planes during the Second World War, and still tinkers with car mechanics.
Eric loves his football and often supports the Blues at Cardiff City Stadium.
Even now, he is still going strong, continuing to greet Members and Guests to the Club
and says he has no thoughts about retiring just yet!
He has made many friends over the years and has hardly missed a day's work since he started with us.

The Committee, Staff and all his friends at the Club wished him a Happy Birthday
at his party and hope he celebrates many more of them in the future!!

Children's Charity Fund
Donation to Dylan

Two-year old Dylan Bethell has been given £240 for probes for fingertip sensors for his pulse oximeter from the Club’s Children’s Charity Fund.

Dylan has been in and out of the Children’s Hospital for Wales at the Heath, Cardiff, since the day he was born as he suffers from a rare disease, primary pulmonary lymphangiectasia. Unfortunately he is also allergic to even the smallest trace of fat and his food intake has to be rigorously monitored by his mum Claire.

Pictured above is Dylan with his parents Paul and Claire
receiving their cheque from Club Chairman, Neil Willis (right)
when they visited our Sports Complex.

Norman's Retirement
28th March 2008

Mary's Retirement - September 2007

After almost 30 years employment with the Sports & Social Club, Mrs Mary Culliford retired on the 21st September 2007. Mary was initially employed as the Club's Lottery Administrator in 1978 and worked her way up to becoming Deputy Manager in 2005. Mary (she's the pretty one) is pictured above with Mr Neil Willis (Chairman) on the left, and Mr Norman Lang (Recreation Manager), at her retirement party, given in honour to celebrate her many years of loyal and valued service.

On behalf of all the Membership we wish her many years of happy retirement.

Children's Charity Fund Donation - Update

Two years after the CMCSSC Children’s Charity Fund donated a cheque for £500 to Leanne Collis towards funds for a special sensory room, special wheelchair and computer equipment for her daughter Olivia who has cerebral palsy. Pictured above is Olivia, (who is now 4 years old) playing with her 8-year old brother Calum in the vibrating ball pit in the sensory room. Leanne says, "Olivia is getting a huge amount of stimulation and pleasure from the sensory room." Leanne also sends a big "Thank You!" to everyone who has given money to the CMCSSC Children’s Charity Fund.

Film Star Guests

Film stars Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas were guests of the Social Club on 20th June 2006, when they attended a special luncheon in the Recreation Hall after officially opening Phase 1 of the Children's Hospital for Wales on the Heath site. During the luncheon they were entertained by children and teachers from Rhydypenau School, Cardiff, who performed traditional Welsh folk songs and dance.

President's Room - Available for Hire

This multi-purpose room is open for general use. It is furbished with the latest digital Audio-Visual equipment to make it an ideal venue to hire for functions, meetings and promotional presentations for both Cardiff University and Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust staff to take full advantage of. Please contact the Reception Desk for hiring details and availability.

The room, re-named the President's Room, was officially opened by Mr Simon Jones, Chairman of the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust, during the launch of the new Trust internet site.

New Membership Cards for Member's Children

Member’s children, 16 years and over and in full-time education, are now able to have full use of the sporting facilities, provided a photograph is put on back of Main Membership Card. This does not include access to the bar.  For parents who may experience difficulty with children using their card, a second membership card can be obtained for a fee of £5, a second photograph of the main member must be submitted with the student photograph on application.  A Students Union Card must be submitted, if applicable.

Students who are 18 years old and over and still in full time education can pay the student concessionary fee of £36 and have their own membership card, which also allows access to the bar. A Student’s Union Card must be produced when applying for membership.

In all instances, the Main Member must have a current membership card. Only one duplicate, for any lost card, at a cost of £5, will be issued in any financial year.  All rules and regulations apply as for spouse membership. Membership Forms are available from the Reception Desk.

Recreation Hall Divided

A curtain track has been fitted in the Recreation Hall to enable areas of the Hall to be divided off, giving three different size options to the area. This will allow for smaller functions/groups to use the Hall for various events in a made-to-measure environment. Please enquire at the Reception Desk for more details of hiring the Hall.

Car Parking Permits

The Club has secured parking concessions for Members who would not normally be entitled to a parking permit for the UHW site. A permit is available for 'off peak' hours only, i.e. after 5.00pm and at weekends, which will entitle holders to park at the UHW 'staff' reduced rate of payment. (Please note that the permit is renewable on an annual basis.)

If you wish to be considered for this concession, pick up a Car Parking Application Form at the Reception Desk, or you can print one out by clicking here and return it to the Recreation Manager at the address on the Form.

CMCSSC Children's Charity Fund

The CMCSSC Children’s Charity Fund was originally formed in 1988 by members of the Bar Committee after the Club had received several letters from parents of local children with serious health problems asking for financial help.

Since then, the Club organises regular fund-raising events, e.g. televised Rugby and Football Internationals in the Lounge and Main Bars, Sponsored Pool Marathons, etc., where the monies collected go towards deserving children in the community or local children’s charities. For example, in the past, we have donated £1,000 from the Fund to Ty Hafan, the Children’s Hospice, for a special bed.

In 1988, money was donated from the Fund to
help build a fresh-water well for villagers at Harambee in Africa.

A cheque to pay for special glasses was presented to Christopher Brockway and his mother by Neil Willis, Management Committee
Chairman.

The Children’s Charity Fund bought Catriona Lovell ‘Text Extra’ software to enlarge text size on her computer to make it easier to read.

We are always open to suggestions for worthy causes, especially in the Cardiff district. If you are aware of a child who might benefit from the Fund, please contact the Recreation Manager, Mrs Kath Chinnock via the Main Office Tel: (029) 2074 2927.
